Nino's Southern Sides is a proud part of the V&J Holding Companies family β a Milwaukee-born empire built from one restaurant into the nation's largest African American-owned restaurant franchise.
In 1982, Dr. Valerie Daniels-Carter and her brother John W. Daniels Jr. opened a single Burger King in Milwaukee with nothing but vision and determination. Over the next 16 years, that one restaurant grew into 132 locations across eight states, employing over 4,500 people. V&J Holding Companies is now the nation's largest African American-owned restaurant franchise and a perennial Top 10 employer recognized by Black Enterprise Magazine. Nino's Southern Sides carries that legacy forward β soul food done right, rooted in Milwaukee, built for the community.

Born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Dr. Valerie Daniels-Carter is the trailblazing co-founder and CEO of V&J Holding Companies, Inc. β the nation's largest African American-owned restaurant franchise. In 1982, she and her brother, Attorney John W. Daniels Jr., opened a single Burger King in Milwaukee. That was just the beginning.
Over the next 16 years, Dr. Daniels-Carter built V&J into a multi-brand, quick-service restaurant enterprise with 132 locations across eight states and 4,500 employees β all while becoming a perennial Top 10 employer recognized by Black Enterprise Magazine. V&J's brands span Burger King, Auntie Anne's, Cinnabon, Coffee Beanery, and more.
A devoted philanthropist, Dr. Daniels-Carter has supported the development of a Boys & Girls Club, a Family Service Center, three schools, and a Credit Union in Milwaukee. She holds a B.S. in Business Administration from Lincoln University and an M.B.A. from Cardinal Stritch University, and was recognized by the National Action Network in 2024 as an innovator and trailblazer.
